EPA Market Update (11/7/09): enjoy the last taste of summer

So we've had another week of warm weather--so warm that you could almost imagine it was still summertime! Don't be fooled, though. It's November, and in the afternoon there's a cold wind in the air, and pretty soon it will start to cool down again. But don't you worry. Your farmers' market will run until December 19, rain or shine. There are already changes beginning in the selection of produce from our farmers.

Now's the time to enjoy the last of this year's peppers, chilies, eggplant, tomatoes and strawberries. You can buy these delicious items year-round, but you know there's nothing like eating produce that ripened under the warm rays of California's sun! The colder weather also brings great winter vegetables. It's a great time to buy all types of Asian greens; roots like taro, daikon and sweet potatoes; and of course you can't forget the collard greens!

Come out and shop for some healthy food this Saturday, and shoot the breeze with your neighbors. We expect to have:

* persimmons coming into season right now

* taro root and leaves (have you tried them yet?);

* fresh peanuts (you roast them how you like them);

* tasty sugarcane (yum yum yum);

* purslane and bitter melon (the nutritional benefits are beyond description);

* rainbow chard (not just pretty to look at);

* juicy apples;

* organic peppers (serrano and bell), lettuce, and cabbage (yum, yum, yum and yum);

* sweet potatoes;

* jicama;

* okra (come early for the best selection);

* heirloom tomatoes (sweet and juicy);

* freshly-made hummos and other Mediterranean snacks (made right in Belmont, and perfect for appetizers and healthy snacks);

* strawberries (arrive early before they sell out);

* yummy honey (ask Transito Zamudio);

* nopales, chayote, basil, cilantro, cucumbers, broccoli, mint, onions, greens, and other vegetables; and

* much more!

Hemos tenido otra semana de buen tiempo--tan calenta que usted casi podría imaginarse que todavía fue verano. Ya es noviembre, y hay por la tarde un viento frío en el aire, y bastante pronto comenzará a estar más frío de nuevo. Pero no se preocupa. Se Mercado correrá hasta el 19 de diciembre, incluso cuándo hay lluvia. Y ya hay cambios en la selección de productos de nuestros granjeros.
