Enjoy the last taste of Summer

Saturday, November 7, 2009

So we've had another week of warm weather, so warm you could almost imagine it was still summertime. But now in the afternoon's there's a cold wind in the air, and pretty soon it will start to cool down again. The EPA Farmer's Market will run until December 19, but already there are changes beginning in the selection of produce from our farmers.

Now's the time to enjoy the last of this year's peppers, chiles, eggplant, tomatoes and strawberries. You can buy these things year-round, but you know there's nothing like eating produce that ripened in the open under the California sun! The colder weather also brings great winter vegetables - it's a great time to buy all types of Asian greens; roots like taro, daikon and sweet potatoes; and of course you can't forget the collard greens!

Come out and shop for some healthy food this Saturday, and shoot the breeze with your neighbors. We expect to have:

  • tasty persimmons, coming into season right now;
  • taro root and leaves (have you tried them yet?);
  • fresh peanuts (you roast them how you like them);
  • tasty sugarcane (yum yum yum);
  • organic veggies, including broccolini, watercress, carrots, and lettuce;
  • okra (come early for the best selection);
  • purslane and bitter melon (the health benefits are beyond description);
  • more greens than you can shake a fist at;
  • tomatoes (they're still delicious);
  • freshly-made hummos and other Mediterranean snacks (made right in Belmont, and perfect for appetizers);
  • strawberries (from Salinas);
  • delicious apples;
  • yummy honey;
  • nopales, chayote, basil, cilantro, cucumbers, broccoli, mint, onions, greens, and other vegetables; and
  • much more!
