EPA Market Update (10/3/09): value is the name of the game

Good afternoon . . .

You know that autumn has arrived when stores start to display their Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa gear. It's happening already! Can you believe it?

And with this arrival of fall (and more importantly, the holiday season), we sometimes see increased expenses. All that fruit cake, cookies and wrapping paper don't come free. To help us all prepare for this season of spending, this week we're focusing on the value present every Saturday at the East Palo Alto Community Farmers' Market.

Have you seen all that $5 can buy you at the Market? It's probably more than you think. We did a little experiment a couple of weeks ago, and asked our farmers to show us the best value at their stand, as long as it cost $5 or less--the same dollar amount of the EPA Fresh Checks that we distribute every Saturday.

The affordable fun begins this Saturday at 2pm, and lasts, as always, until 5pm. We expect to have a scrumptious assortment of delicious fruits and vegetables, including:

* purslane and bitter melon (the nutritional benefits are beyond description);

* organic yellow corn (the delicious kind);

* organic peppers (serrano and bell), lettuce, and cabbage (yum, yum, yum and yum);

* sweet potatoes;

* okra (come early for the best selection);

* heirloom tomatoes! (oh so sweet and juicy);

* freshly-made hummos and other Mediterranean snacks (made right in Belmont, and perfect for appetizers and healthy snacks);

* tangy Indian peaches, sweet white peaches, multiple kinds of nectarines, plums and pluots;

* strawberries (arrive early before they sell out);

* watermelons;

* yummy honey (ask Transito Zamudio);

* nopales, chayote, basil, cilantro, cucumbers, broccoli, mint, onions, greens, and other vegetables; and

* much more!

EBT/food stamps, WIC and Senior FMNP checks always accepted.

* WIC: we're happy to accept WIC FMNP market coupons.

Usted sabe que otoño ha llegado cuándo tiendas comienzan a demostrar sus cosas de la Navidad/Januká/Kwanzaa. ¡Ya ha llegado! ¿Usted lo puede creer?

Y con esta llegada del otoño (y lo que es más importante, la temporada de la Navidad), a veces vemos gastos aumentados. Todos esos cosas especiales de la Navidad no son baratas. Para ayudarnos a preparar para esta temporada del gasto, esta semana nos centramos en el valor de los productos que son disponibles todos los sábados en el Mercado.

¿Ha usted visto todo lo que $5 le puede comprar en el Mercado? Probablemente sea más que usted cree. Hicimos un experimento pequeño hace algunas semanas, y pedimos que nuestros granjeros mostraranos el mejor valor en su selección, siempre que cueste $5 o menos--la misma cantidad de cada EPA Fresh Check que distribuimos todos los sábados.
