EPA Market Update (9/19/09): make like the Obamas and shop this Saturday

To start, let us make one thing clear: your farmers' market has no political agenda. We love cowboys, hippies, rappers, gardeners and politicians all the same, no matter if they ride over on a donkey or an elephant. That being said, at the seat of national executive power (not too unlike the seat of city-wide executive power at which we take place every Saturday), a farmers' market is being launched today!

At the White House! Well, just a few blocks away. And, just like our market, it features locally grown produce, and accepts EBT/food stamps, WIC and Senior FMNP checks. Rumor has it that the Obamas might stop by. Not to be outdone, yesterday we extended an invitation to First Lady Michelle Obama. We'll let you know how it goes.

In the meantime, here's your second reminder that the season for Indian (blood) peaches is short. Transito Zamudio has told us that this may be the last Saturday for them. Like we said before, these tangy-sweet globes of heaven are delicious! Find them this Saturday (maybe the last!) for somewhere around $1.50 per pound.

The party begins this Saturday at 2pm, and lasts, as always, until 5pm. We expect to have a scrumptious assortment of delicious fruits and vegetables, including:

* purslane and bitter melon (the nutritional benefits are beyond description);

* organic yellow corn (the delicious kind);

* organic peppers (serrano and bell), lettuce, and cabbage (yum, yum, yum and yum);

* sweet potatoes;

* okra (come early for the best selection);

* heirloom tomatoes! (oh so sweet and juicy);

* freshly-made hummos and other Mediterranean snacks (made right in Belmont, and perfect for appetizers and healthy snacks);

* tangy Indian peaches, sweet white peaches, multiple kinds of nectarines, plums and pluots;

* strawberries (arrive early before they sell out);

* watermelons;

* yummy honey (ask Transito Zamudio);

* nopales, chayote, basil, cilantro, cucumbers, broccoli, mint, onions, greens, and other vegetables; and

* much more!

Para comenzar, permitirnos hacer una cosa: su mercado evita la política. Adoramos a vaqueros, los hippies, los rappers, los jardineros y los políticos todo lo mismo, ningún asunto si ellos cabalgan sobre un asno ni un elefante. Eso ser dicho, en el asiento del poder ejecutivo nacional un mercado de granjeros abre hoy.

¡En la Casa Blanca! Bien, justo unos pocos bloques lejos. Y, como nuestro mercado, tiene productos localmente crecidos, y acepta EBT/cupónes de alimentos, WIC y cheques Mayores de FMNP. Oímos un rumor que quizás los Obamas lo visiten. Porque nosotros nunca queremos quedarse atrás, ayer nosotros extendimos una invitación a Michelle Obama. Nosotros le diremos cómo va.

Mientras tanto, aquí está su segundo recordatorio que la temporada para melocotones Indios (de sangre) es corta. Transito Zamudio nos ha dicho que esto puede ser el ultimo sábado para estos melocotones. Como dijimos la semana pasada, ¡estos globos dulces del cielo son deliciosos! Encuéntrelos este sábado por alrededor de $1,50 por libra.

La fiesta empieza este sábado a las 2 de la tarde, y dura, como siempre, hasta 5 p.m. Nosotros esperamos tener un surtido espléndido de frutas y verduras deliciosas, incluyendo:

* melocotones Indios;

* maíz orgánico;
