Food Justice Leaders

Four Food Justice Leaders work part-time (15-20 hours per week) between June and August: two as Garden Leaders, and two as Market Leaders. Look for them at the Market! Food Justice Leaders:

  • make a difference in their community
  • grow food right here, right now
  • work outside
  • help at the EPA Farmers’ Market
  • learn about business, agriculture, food justice, community work & public health
  • HAVE A PAID JOB.

Market Leaders contribute to the operations of the weekly East Palo Alto Community Farmers’ Market. Leaders will help with:

  • the setup and breakdown of market equipment
  • assuring positive customer relations
  • maintaining friendly relationships with local vendors
  • assisting with vendor paperwork.

Farmers’ Market Food Justice Leaders will also work to conduct weekday outreach in East Palo Alto and surrounding areas, including distributing flyers, gathering community feedback, and delivering presentations, and will help set market direction and strategy at twice-monthly market committee meetings.

Garden Leaders focus on growing and harvesting food in the Collective Roots garden to sell at the farmers’ market and donate to local food banks.  Garden Leaders will assist in the garden by:

  • planting, weeding, watering and harvesting in the garden
  • learning about and practicing organic gardening techniques
  • developing educational material about the garden and food
  • preparing vegetables to sell at the market or donate.

Additionally, Garden Youth Leaders will work with the Garden Manager to strategize how to best market the garden’s produce, sell the produce at the East Palo Alto Community Farmers Market, and coordinate food donations.  Successful youth candidates will be interested in hands-on garden work, as well as a market/business role.
